Memory Jar

This project explores how old memories are forgotten and entangled with new ones over time. The inside of the sculpture was left unburnished, unglazed, and full of messy tangles. I hand-dyed yarn using botanical methods then wove it into a stoneware jar I threw with holes in it.

Each of these three stoneware jar flutes, when edge-blown across the opening in the top, sounds a different pitch. They were inspired by Hermeto Pascoal’s Música da Lagoa from 1985.

Made as my final project during a study abroad program at Bordallo Pinheiro ceramics factory in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.
